If you are a parent who is at their wits end regarding potty training, there is some potty training advice that can help. Many parents report their children have no interest in the potty whatsoever. Some toddlers will throw horrible tantrums when the subject is even mentioned. Defiance at the idea of potty training is one sign that your toddler is not ready to begin. The guidelines say that children potty train between 18 and 36 months, but both of my own boys were past 36 months, and they are now fully trained, and were far before kindergarten started.

So, step one is relax. Most average children, if any for that matter, are going to go to elementary school wearing a diaper or pull on training pants. They are going to grow into the desire to want to use the toilet and wear underwear like everyone else. One sign to look for is your child demonstrating discomfort with wet or soiled pants. Once they learn underwear are more comfortable and the potty is nothing to fear they will likely want to use it. Speaking of the potty, the type you purchase can also be helpful.

There are potties that play music and have lights. Then there are some for girls and boys that look like prince and princess thrones. Of course there are also simple white potty chairs that have a resemblance to the big toilet. You can even get seats that fit on top of your toilet seat for your toddler to sit on. These seats have handles, are usually cushioned and make it comfortable and easy for toddlers to use the adult toilet. Some may prefer this, however make sure they are not afraid when flushing as this is a common toddler phobia. Explain to them that there is no way they can fit down the potty when it flushes.

Another piece of potty training advice is to share your concerns with the pediatrician. They may tell you to go back to diapers for while and try again later. Forcing a child to potty train can lead to all sorts of problems. Some children get into the habit of holding their bowels and end up needing prescribed laxatives or enemas. You may also want to pick up a potty training DVD for both you and your child. There are some that are made for parents and some especially for kids.
