He’s almost 2, but I think he’s ready…he hides after he’s done his business, and he’s expressed interest when Daddy does his business. How often should I encourage him to use his potty chair? And how long should I have him sit on his potty chair? Also,I am terrified of him still being in diaper’s at age 3, is that too old?

If he is also staying dry during nap times and or bed times he is showing signs of readiness. You can go ahead and get him to use the potty chair every hour and when his daddy is using the big one.

Keep him on the potty for at least a few minutes. Give him a toy to keep him entertained. This also can get you his cooperation too.

Three years old and in a diaper is not too old. Typically boys will potty train between age 3 and 3 1/2. There are some who do potty train earlier.

Potty training is a big transition for your son. He is learning about the feelings (urges) he has when he needs to go pee or poo. With your help by taking him to the potty every hour he will start to understand when he has those urges it means it is time to use the potty. Some children this is picked up quickly while for others it takes more time. Parents are the teachers and is important they also prepare themselves for the potty training process.

Parenting Tips for Potty Training

Potty training can be a difficult experience for both parent and child.  When done correctly, it can be a moment in time that is looked at as a blessing.  The child feels like a ‘big kid’, the parent gets out of buying diapers!  But, when rushed, it can be a disaster.

Therefore, before even considering the process, ask yourself these questions:

1.  Is this a relatively stress-free time in the family?

Look carefully at your current family situation.  Is there extra time?  Are activities at the lowest possible point in time?  No major changes coming soon?  Job stress low?  It is important to have the time and patience to successfully get through potty training with a smile on your face.  So, if you have big projects at work or the distant relative is coming to stay with you for awhile, now may not be the greatest of times to get started.  However, if everything is running smoothly, it may be the perfect time to begin.

2.  Is your child ready?

It use to be that a child was pushed to be potty trained at the age of one.  Those days are long gone, thank goodness.  By nature, a child starts to become interested around the age of two.  However, each child is different and the final decision as to when to try and use the potty is strictly between the parent and child.

When a child is ready, they will start to show signs.

Signs of readiness:

·                     Child wanting to wear ‘big kid’ underwear

·                     Keeping their diaper dry for 2 hours

·                     Having predictable bowel movements

·                     Telling you when they have to go

·                     Uncomfortable wearing diapers

·                     Able to pull their own pants up and down

If they show the above signs, it might just be time to give it a shot.

Ready?

·                     Take your child to the store and let them pick out their own potty chair.

·                     Encourage them to decorate it with stickers and drawings to make it feel more like their own.

·                     Start by just letting them sit on it whenever they want, for whatever reason.  They may want to read a book while sitting on their potty; they may also want to use the potty with their diaper on.  Just sitting on it will help them be more comfortable.

·                     Make “potty time” a routine.  Set specific times your child sits on the potty for a few minutes, whether or not they actually use it doesn’t matter.

·                     At other then the designated times, if they show signs of need, rush them to the potty chair and reward them if they successfully used the chair.

·                     Try NOT to get mad when they have an accident.  This process takes time and practice and the children should be rewarded for successes.  Not punished for failures.

·                     When your child does a “poo-poo” in their diapers, help them take it to the potty chair.  That will quietly tell them where the “poo-poo” goes.

After several weeks of success, it may be time to ditch the diapers.  Make this a big event.  Let the child throw them away and let them know they are now a “big” boy or girl.  This is a moment to be celebrated and remember.  Maybe bake a cake and take pictures.

If your child is still in need of night time cover, buy special pull-ups or night time trainers.  They look and feel more like underwear and your child will not feel like they failed at night due to accidents.  Don’t even call them diapers.  They are simply “Night Trainers.”  It is perfectly normal for the nights to take a little longer for the child to gain control over.

This can be a long and difficult process, but it is a huge part of growing up.  Some children take longer than others.  Try not to worry and do not to let anyone comment on the length of training.  Keep in mind that this is equally as stressful for your child as it is for you.

Children grow up so fast and unless unusual circumstances exist, there are no children walking down the aisle to graduate high school wearing diapers!  So, relax!  All things will come in time, including potty training.

Potty Training Your Puppy Properly

So you have a new puppy in your house? Well, then your hands are definitely full. You have a new furry bundle of love who is running around your house, chasing dog toys, and chances are having a couple of accidents on your carpet. Potty training your puppy can be a challenge, and you need to know what to expect.

Potty training your puppy is not really something that you can expect to do until you little guy has hit about the six-month mark. Any younger than this, and it is not really reasonable to expect them to be able to control their bladders like an older dog would.

When you begin to potty train your pup, you need to come to the realization that you will not be able to monitor your little guy twenty-four hours a day. There will be times when you need to leave the house. To prepare for this you will want to make sure that you have prepared the room that you are leaving your puppy in. You will want to have the entire floor covered in paper. Then you also want to make sure that your puppy has food and water, his bed, and his dog toys in there so that he can stay busy.

As your puppy gets more familiar with the potty training ritual, start to reduce the amount of paper that you have on the floor. Your puppy will have gotten into the habit of going potty on the paper, so as you shrink the amount of paper on the floor your puppy will begin to resist the urge to go potty on it. Eventually, you will want to remove all of the paper. However, before you do this you will want to get your puppy used to going to the bathroom outside.

To do this you will want to get your puppy on a very scheduled going outside schedule. Typically, you want to aim to take your puppy outside anytime that he needs to go to the bathroom. On average, this tends to be approximately every forty-five minutes. You will also want to take your puppy out after every time they eat, drink, wake up, and after a big play session with their favorite dog toys.

Make sure that when your puppy succeeds in going potty in the right area that you praise and reward him. This will make sure that your puppy learns that if he wants to get treats and good attention then he needs to go potty in the right places. Though it may be frustrating, you have to be careful not to get angry at your puppy when he makes mistakes. At his young age, he may not understand why you are yelling or punishing him, and that will not help you in the potty training process. Instead, you should focus on the positive reinforcement. Of course, positive vocal praise is a great way to encourage your little guy. But don’t forget about pulling out their favorite dog toys so that you can have a vigorous play session, or about giving them a tasty dog treat. If you can focus on those types of reinforcement your new puppy will be potty trained in no time!

I want to potty train my son, but he’s still in a crib right now, and getting him a bigger bed is a little while off. We CAN take a side off his crib – but I’m wondering if we should spend a week getting him used to his bed if we do that, before starting potty training. Does he need to be in a toddler bed? Don’t they wear diapers at night for a little while, while you’re training? Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!! icon surprised Potty training: Does your toddler need to be out of the crib before you start? )

I think that the crib will be fine. When a toddler first starts potty training he or she will not go on their own. The parent generally takes the child to the potty every 1-2 hours.

How to Potty Train a Puppy

When is the best time to potty train your puppy? Potty training should be as early as possible. You can start to potty train a puppy as soon as they arrive at your house. Let your puppy familiarize your place first and start to potty train once they seem to look comfortable with your place. Puppies tend to make your house in a mess at the beginning stage. They will go around your house and leave trace of urine and motion. Hence, you need to know how to potty train a puppy so that they will not go around messing your place.

- Schedule time for your puppy to potty
One of the basic step to potty train a puppy is to learn how to watch out their signs of the urge to potty. Your puppy may start to sniff and scratch the floor, going round and round at one area trying to lie down and stand up the next second. You should always bring your puppy to the right spot to relieve their urine or motion. Your puppy would normally want to relieve when they wake up, eat, drink or after playing. This will help to cultivate a good habit of doing it at the right place and soon your puppy will know where their “toilet” is.

- Praise your puppy

You should always praise your puppy when they are doing right. This will create better confidence in your dog.

- Do not punish your puppy

It is common for your puppy to make mistakes at this stage. Scolding or punishing your puppy will make them more confused and they may resist to further training when harsh methods are used on them.

- Patience
Potty train a puppy need a lot of patience and time. It is just like teaching your babies, they need time to understand.

An effective potty training will make your life more peaceful and easier. It will also make a good foundation to start your puppy obedience training. Desperate for help with potty training toddler?

My son is 3.5 years old and is making zero progress with potty training. My husband and I have done everything to aid him in this milestone. Rewards, stickers, taking away pull ups, asking every hour, then every 30 minutes, using charts, videos, books, everything! I have tried laying off for a while to give him a break, but that hasn’t worked either. We are confident that he is ready because he sleeps through naps and nightime without wetting. Additionally, whenever he goes to the bathroom, he always says "I go potty" after he does it on himself. Needless to say we are at our complete wits end with the entire process. My patience is spent, and I have run out of ideas. I’ve consulted friends and family with children for advice, read books, surfed the net, always coming up with the same methods we’ve exhausted. This child is very bright otherwise – thus increasing my frustration that he can’t get this. While my husband isn’t as worried as I am, we both are about to loose it. HELP!!!!

Ok please understand that your child will master the potty training in his own time. The very fact that you said your son is very bright is a sign that potty training just isn’t on his list of must dos at the moment. His brain is far too interested in other things.
If you force him, it will be a disaster. He will become afraid of the whole process. So let him lead you when he is ready.

Your child is 3.5 years old, but that is still a common age to be still wearing nappies.
It is likely that your child will master potty training very very quickly. Rather than some children it takes up to three weeks to learn potty training. And even then some children relapse. They always say the later you do the training the quicker the child will learn what to do. It is because they will have more understanding.

You could try getting him to wear knickers under his nappy so that he learns when he is wet and what it feels like.

Introduce your child (if you can) to some older children. He will probably want to copy them.

If you put a few drops of blue dye in the toilet, he might enjoy watching it change to green when he has a wee.

Get him to watch his mum and dad going to the toilet, as he will already use you as his main role models.

If you can take off his pants and nappy and let him be free to wonder and see if when he needs to use the toilet he asks you for his potty.

When he does use the potty, give him loads of praise. Get him to make his own sticker chart. Don’t put any grids on the chart. Just let him put the stickers where he wants to. after 3 or 4 stickers give him a reward. Get a few inexpensive items and put them in a bag and let him choose one of those ever so often.

Get him used to putting his pull ups on and off, so that he is confident to use the toilet by himself.

Even buying toddler friendly fun wipes where your son chooses, and handwash too, makes potty training fun.

Not one book can give you the exact answer that will work for your son. Your child is an individual after all.

How about having two or three of your sons favourite books in the toilet, for him to read when he is on the toilet. It will make the toilet less scary for him.

Most of all stick to it and try to keep the routine the same. Repetition gets results.

How do I start potty training my toddler?

He’s 16-months-old and I’ve introduced him to his potty. We’ve placed it in the bathroom so it’s there. He has sat on it before so I believe this is a good start. Were do I go from here? I know it will be a little while before he actually understands what to do.

My daughter used to follow me too the loo. We also have books and dvd explaining what the potty is for. It says to start fully dressed, then seeing what time your child usually uses the toilet in his nappy and sitting him on it for a little while and when he does praise him for it, flush it down the toilet, and then wash hands.
