Potty Training Toddler Age Children

image2 thumb Potty Training Toddler Age ChildrenIf you are potty training toddler age children or a toddler age child, there are some helpful tips that can help. The toddler age is roughly defined between 18 and 36 months of age, which is also the average age for potty training. If you ask around to moms and dads you may find that boys are reported as harder to train than girls, who may train on the early side of the spectrum. Why this is the case is not completely known. The most important thing is to make sure your child is ready, regardless of their age.

Some children will actually go a bit over the 36 month age. The worst thing you can do is try and force your child to potty train, which may have the opposite of the desired effect by pushing them further away from the potty. If you want to broach the subject with your toddler, mention it in casual conversation. Allow boys to observe brothers and dads, and girls to observe older sisters and moms using the potty. Your child may also benefit from a potty training DVD. There are also potty training DVD titles for parents as well that offer helpful tips. Some toddlers may even enjoy a demonstrative potty training doll.

When you go shopping with your toddler, let them choose their own potty chair so they have a personal connection to it. Ask your toddler if they would prefer a potty seat that fits on the big toilet. This is easier for parents to clean as all you do is flush. Some children do well with these, others prefer the floor potty chair. When picking the potty you may also want to let your children choose underwear to wear when they are successfully potty trained, which can be a good motivator.

Potty training toddler age children doesn’t have to be a stressful experience for parents or children. The best way to prevent stress, as mentioned before, is not to pressure or force your child to potty train before they are ready. Once they are ready, implementing a potty schedule when you place them on the potty (perhaps with a favourite  book) can help them develop a routine over time, they will get into the habit of going to the potty every few hours or as needed.

Sorry for all the potty training questions….

When potty training your toddler, did you use regular toilet paper to wipe for # 2 or did you use baby wipes?

We’ve tried using toilet paper and honestly…it doesn’t work all that well for his little butt. But baby wipes aren’t flushable (at least the ones we buy?).

So I’m curious, for my 3 yr old son, what would be best? Try to use toilet paper because that’s usually what’s there?

Toilet paper or wipes?
My son has only been potty training for about 3 days. And he tried wiping his butt the other day with toilet paper and it didn’t go well. LOL. So I think maybe flushable wipes are good to start until he gets the hang of it. Then he can go back to toilet paper.

We switched to the "cottenelle" (I think) "flushable Wipes"

Ya toilet paper didn’t really work…and he wasn’t a real happy camper with the regular TP…but I wasn’t about to plug up the plumbing with the extra thick aloe and cucumber Huggies wipes, that he’s used to…lol.

We use these for him….

I think Pampers also has some made under the name "Kandoo" that are geared more for kids..

What is the right time to potty train toddlers?

My 20 mo old is starting to talk and say words like potty. Should I start potty training her. My mother says to wait until she’s two but I’m not sure.

Well as each child is individual so is their potty training. Some are ready sooner than others. My kids were ready closer to 3yrs. Some kids are ready by 20 months. Yet its not until about 14-18 months that they really notice and a bit later before they feel and can control their bodily functions. Sometimes pushing the matter can have repercutions and set you back a whole year. If you let the child show you when they are ready usually it is easier on everyone and quicker. They will show you when they are ready when they mimic you, can tell you ahead of time they have to go pee, and ask you lots of questions about going pee. The famous one is I want to pee just like mommy/daddy. comments. Go ahead and show them the potty chair, but don’t force it.

I see a lot of cute onesbut the biggest complaint I hear is that their kids think it’s a toy. I want one my child is not going to play with, I want her to understand it’s a potty not a toy.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

You have to strike a balance, because potty training can be daunting. If you introduce this strange new thing the first day of potty training, they may be too intimidated to use it. On the other hand, they need to understand what that they have to use it for.

What worked for our daughter was that we explained what it was a few days before starting, and we let her decorate a very plain potty with Dora stickers, which really made it her own. We also let her sit on it fully clothed, just to get her comfortable with the idea. Although she did sit her dolls on her ‘special chair’ sometimes, the context was often correct (she was pretending that they were going to the bathroom). Although we had the usual potty training struggles, at least she was prepared for the process, and I think she did quite well.

So, to answer your question, a plain potty will do. Just make sure it’s easy to clean regularly, and let your daughter decorate it herself.

A Look at Potty Training

A Look at a Few Potty Training Methods

When parents start thinking about potty training their child they look to a number of sources for advice; parenting magazines, grandparents, friends and professionals. The number of methods and range of advice is huge, making it a daunting task before even beginning. In the end you just need to find a program that works for you and your child. You may have to use one program for one child and an entirely different program for another child.

Late Potty Training:

Some parents wait until their child is at least two years old before even thinking about potty training. Thinking that they need to wait until their child can verbalize the need to go potty, their child wants to be potty trained and often this isn’t until age 3 or 4.

While some children may train easily at this age for many it makes potty training more difficult. Once a child turns two they want to do everything their way. You say “It’s time to go potty” and they say “No” because it wasn’t their idea. And they will fight to the end to get their way.

An older child is also more mobile and is easily distracted making it difficult to convince them to sit on the potty long enough to accomplish the task. They would rather play than take the time to stop and use the potty.

A big disadvantage to late potty training is that most pre-schools require the children to be fully potty trained. Some parents that potty train late are even faced with the possibility that their child may not be able to start Kindergarten on time because they are not fully potty trained.

The other extreme to late potty training is the EC or Elimination Communication method.

This method relies on the parents recognizing their child’s facial expressions and other cues often from birth. Just as many parents can tell when their baby is tired or hungry based on their cues they can also learn to recognize their child’s elimination cues. Whenever a baby starts showing signs of needing to eliminate the parents are instructed to hold the baby over the potty and make a “shhhh” sound. Eventually the baby associates this sound with elimination and does so on cue.

I realize this method has worked for some parents, but to me it just isn’t practical for most families. Who has the time, especially if you have more than one child or work outside the home, to be consistent with this method?

A nice compromise between the two is the Baby Signs Potty Training Program.

It doesn’t require the constant vigilance of the EC method, but it allows babies to reach communication readiness long before they can speak. The Baby Signs Potty Training Method focuses on potty training before the age of two.

Babies are taught the five potty time signs so they can signal the need to go potty long before they can speak it. By training before the age of two the chances of it turning into a power struggle are significantly reduced. Babies are mobile, but still willing to spend more time in one place. They are at an age where they are excited to learn new things and show them off to parents.

Although the program is designed with the second year in mind the book has an abundance of information for earlier or later potty training. Drs. Linda Acredelo and Susan Goodwyn realize that there are a lot of different types of personalities and circumstances from one family to another and they give instructions on how to be successful with each of them!

An Introduction to Toddler Potty Training

image4 thumb An Introduction to Toddler Potty Training If you’re considering toddler potty training for your tiny one it is useful to get the facts first. One thing you really ought to know is that most kids aren’t prepared to toilet train till they are eighteen months to thirty six months of age. Of course, each kid is dissimilar and some may start eventually than this timeline. It has been said among moms that boys are famously harder to potty-train than girls, and they often train later instead of earlier. Knowing these rules, you can relax if your youngster hasn’t yet been successfully toilet trained.

Many mums have been in the situation of listening to another ma chirp about how briskly her toddler learned to toilet train. Do not let this get you down, at last all kids will toilet train. As a sensible pediatrician once claimed, they are not going to go off to varsity wearing nappies.

So be sure you aren’t pressuring yourself or your kid to toilet train too early. There are all types of child potty coaching books, CDs and DVDs that can offer you direction. But which one should you listen to? It could be a better idea to ask your pediatrician what she or he advises.

Regularly these medical pros can provide you with literature and heaps of tips when it is potty coaching time. Not only did they graduate from medical college, they’ve been thru the issue of potty coaching kids many times, maybe even in their own home life. Most doctors will tell you don’t fret if your youngster is late on the potty coaching schedule. Toddler potty coaching doesn’t need to be a worry. The 1st thing you need to do once your youngster is older than eighteen months is look for indicators of their readiness to use the can. This will include expressing pain with mucky nappies and an interest in employing a potty seat.

You might possibly be able to con your kid into making an attempt to potty-train by promising them new underclothes, which can sometimes be a good natural motivation. Even the hardest of babes will finally become house trained, and if any issues arise in the process like trots from holding stool movements your pediatrician is there to help each step of the way. Some, but not all, infants will ‘hold it’ in an effort to forestall going to the potty or soiling their coaching pants, but their doctor will help you break this habit.
